Every summer the same question: is it possible to keep mosquitoes away without using aggressive chemicals? The answer is yes — with awareness. Essential oils are not a perfect solution like DEET, but they are a real, safe, and fragrant choice, if used correctly.
In this article you will find three complete recipes with precise doses — a body spray, a purse-sized roll-on with the EUODIA Crystal Roll-on, and a blend for dry diffusion — plus everything you need to know about which oils to use, precautions, and what to really expect in terms of effectiveness.
Everything we apply to our skin and breathe through our nose enters our body. And if a substance is harmful, it risks becoming harmful to us too.
Before lighting a mosquito coil, a mosquito repellent mat, or applying a spray to our body — let's remember that. Better yet: read the INCI, and then decide whether to continue doing so.
Our body is a sacred vessel that deserves respect and attention. Keeping insects away is right — but not at the cost of harming ourselves. There is a more conscious way, and that's what you'll find in this article.
— Lorenza Poletto, EUODIA founderBefore you begin: also read the article on photosensitizing essential oils. The main repellent oils — citronella, lemongrass, geranium, eucalyptus citriodora — are not photosensitizing and are safe in the sun. But it's important to know this before formulating any product for topical summer use.
Why choose a natural repellent
Conventional repellents based on DEET or picaridin are effective — no one doubts that. But for those looking for more natural alternatives, for daily use in the garden or on the terrace, for children over 3 in low mosquito pressure environments, or simply for those who prefer to know exactly what they put on their skin, essential oil repellents are a valid choice.
There are limitations, and it must be said clearly: the duration of action is shorter (1-2 hours compared to 4-8 hours for conventional products), the protection is not absolute, and the effectiveness varies depending on the concentration of mosquitoes in the environment. But in a domestic context, for daily evening use in the garden or indoors with open windows, they work.
A natural DIY repellent does not replace a mosquito net, is not equivalent to DEET in heavily infested areas, and needs to be reapplied every 1-2 hours. However, it is an excellent choice for daily use in low-to-medium insect pressure, in combination with diffusion in rooms.
Repellent essential oils: which ones to use
Not all essential oils are equally effective as repellents. Some have more solid scientific literature to support them, others act mainly through aromatic synergy. Let's look at the protagonists of our formulation.
Eucalyptus citriodora: why it's the most important. It is the only essential oil recognized by the WHO as a documented alternative to DEET for malaria protection (in endemic areas, always under medical supervision). Its active ingredient PMD has shown comparable efficacy to low concentrations of DEET in controlled studies. In a European domestic context against common mosquitoes, it is the most reliable component of your blend.
Recipe 1 — Body spray
The most versatile format: it can be applied to skin and clothing, carried in a bag, and easily reapplied. Ideal for use in the garden, on the terrace, or during evening outings.
Natural Anti-Mosquito Spray
- 10 ml Food-grade alcohol (95% food alcohol, available at supermarkets) — or 40%+ vodka as an alternative
- 15 drops Organic Eucalyptus Citriodora Essential Oil
- 10 drops Organic Citronella Essential Oil
- 8 drops Organic Lemongrass Essential Oil
- 7 drops Organic Geranium Essential Oil
- 80 ml Distilled water (or lavender hydrosol for a more delicate version)
- Pour the alcohol into the 100 ml spray bottle.
- Add the essential oils directly to the alcohol and shake well: the alcohol solubilizes the oils, preventing separation.
- Add the distilled water and shake again.
- Close with the spray top and shake before each use.
- Apply to exposed skin and clothing edges, avoiding eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin.
Recipe 2 — Roll-on with crystals
The roll-on is the ultimate purse-sized format: compact, precise, doesn't leak. Ideal for wrists, ankles, neck — the most affected areas. The container we use is the EUODIA Crystal Roll-on, available with clear quartz, amethyst, or obsidian: the crystal ball gently massages the skin while distributing the blend, adding an energetic dimension to the physical protection.
For this type of container, the recommended base is alcohol, aloe vera gel, or jojoba — never vegetable oils that go rancid (almond, coconut, etc.) which over time deteriorate the crystal and compromise the blend.
Anti-Mosquito Roll-on with Crystal
- 3.5 ml Food-grade alcohol (95% food alcohol, available at supermarkets) — perfectly dissolves oils and dries quickly
- 1.5 ml Distilled water — softens the texture of the alcohol
- 3 drops Organic Eucalyptus Citriodora Essential Oil
- 2 drops Organic Citronella Essential Oil
- 2 drops Organic Geranium Essential Oil
- 1 drop Organic True Lavender Essential Oil
- 4 ml EUODIA Pure Aloe Vera Gel — soothing, does not go rancid, compatible with crystal
- 1 ml Organic Jojoba Oil — the only recommended vegetable oil: does not go rancid
- 3 drops Organic Eucalyptus Citriodora Essential Oil
- 2 drops Organic Citronella Essential Oil
- 2 drops Organic Geranium Essential Oil
- 1 drop Organic True Lavender Essential Oil
- Remove the roll-on cap.
- Pour the chosen base (alcohol+water or aloe+jojoba) directly into the bottle.
- Add the essential oils.
- Close with the cap and shake before each use.
- Apply to wrists, ankles, neck. The crystal ball massages as it distributes – use slow circular motions. Reapply every 1.5-2 hours.
two frequencies, one gesture
In the EUODIA Crystal Roll-on, the ball is not just an applicator: it is an integral part of the formulation. Each crystal carries a specific energetic quality, which combines with that of the chosen essential oil.
For summer repellent use, we suggest clear quartz — it amplifies the properties of the oils without adding a directional energetic quality. Obsidian is particularly suitable for those who value the protective dimension of daily gestures.
Recipe 3 — Dry diffusion for rooms
Diffusion is protection for the environment — not for the skin. It creates a concentration of aromatic molecules in the air that disrupts the olfactory sensors of mosquitoes, reducing the likelihood of them approaching. It works best in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces: bedrooms, covered terraces, living rooms with open windows.
With a dry diffuser like ZENITH, ZEFIRO, AURA or TAUER, nebulization is pure — no water, no heat that alters the active molecules. The repellent molecules are diffused intact into the air, maximizing the effectiveness of the blend.
Don't feel like making a blend? Essential oils work great on their own for diffusion. A drop of citronella, lemongrass or eucalyptus citriodora in your diffuser is already a great starting point. The blend enhances the effect, but a single oil is already effective — and often the easiest way to start.
Repellent Blend for Rooms
- 40% Organic Citronella — 4 ml · repellent base
- 30% Organic Lemongrass — 3 ml · reinforces and amplifies
- 20% Organic Eucalyptus Citriodora — 2 ml · most effective molecule
- 10% Organic Geranium — 1 ml · fixes and softens the aroma
- Prepare the blend in a dark 10 ml bottle by mixing the oils in the indicated proportions.
- Pour the amount indicated by your diffuser (usually 5-15 drops for water diffusers, the entire bottle for dry diffusers).
- Start the diffuser 30 minutes before using the room — the molecules need to saturate the space.
- For rooms where you sleep, set intermittent sessions: 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off. Avoid continuous diffusion throughout the night.
Safety and precautions for use
The recipes above are formulated for healthy adults. Before using them, please read these instructions — not to discourage you, but to ensure proper use.
| Situation | Spray / Roll-on | Diffusion | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthy adults | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes | Follow indicated dosages. Reapply every 1-2 hours. |
| Children 3–12 years | ⚠ Reduce | ⚠ Short | Max concentration 1%. Avoid eucalyptus, mint. Apply to clothes, not skin. See dedicated section. |
| Children under 3 years | ✗ No | ✗ No | Do not use essential oils. Use mosquito net. |
| Pregnancy | ⚠ Consult. | ⚠ Short | Consult doctor. Avoid citronella and lemongrass in the first trimester. |
| Sensitive / allergic skin | ⚠ Test | ✓ Yes | Always perform a patch test on a small area before use. Start with low concentrations. |
| Pets in the house | ✓ Yes | ⚠ Caution | Do not diffuse citronella or lemongrass in enclosed spaces with cats. Dogs tolerate better. Always ensure ventilation. |
| Asthma or respiratory problems | ✓ Yes | ⚠ Short | Avoid prolonged diffusion in enclosed spaces. Prefer short sessions with ventilation. |
Photosensitivity: all oils in these recipes — citronella, lemongrass, geranium, eucalyptus citriodora, lavender — are not photosensitizing and can be applied to the skin even before sun exposure. This is one of the advantages of this formulation over other repellent blends that include cold-pressed citrus oils. Learn more in the article photosensitizing essential oils.
A note on children
The recipes above are designed for adults. For children, the rules change significantly — and it's worth dedicating a clear paragraph to this.
Children under 3 years: no essential oils on the skin, no diffusion in enclosed spaces. Mosquito protection comes from mosquito nets, covering clothing, and physical protection of environments.
For children between 3 and 12 years old, if you still choose to use a blend with essential oils, these are the fundamental rules:
- Maximum concentration: 1% total essential oils (half of the adult recipes)
- Avoid eucalyptus, peppermint, and camphor — they can cause bronchospasm in young children
- Preferably use citronella and geranium, which have the best safety profile for this age group
- Apply to clothing rather than directly to the skin
- Do not apply to hands, face, or areas that the child might put in their mouth
- If in doubt, always consult a pediatrician
For children in this age group, the EUODIA Mosquito Repellent Kit is formulated with these considerations — consider it a ready-to-use alternative to DIY preparation.
