Do you know that moment when you turn on the diffuser and after a few minutes you no longer perceive the scent? Many think that at that point aromatherapy has stopped working. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Even when olfactory habituation prevents you from consciously smelling the aroma, your olfactory receptors continue to pick up aromatic molecules and transmit signals to the brain. These reach the limbic system — the part that governs emotions, memory, and well-being — and continue to do their job.

Olfactory habituation: what really happens

Olfactory habituation is a perceptual, not a receptor, phenomenon. It occurs in the cerebral cortex, which decides to ignore a constant olfactory stimulus — a neurological adaptation mechanism that allows us not to be overwhelmed by repetitive stimuli.

But what about the olfactory receptors in the nose? They continue to work. They continue to pick up the essential oil molecules and send signals to the olfactory bulb. The difference is that the cerebral cortex stops consciously registering that stimulus — not that the signal doesn't arrive.

The distinction that changes everything: olfactory habituation = cortex ignoring the signal. Not = receptors stopping working. Not = limbic system stopping responding. Aromatherapy continues to work even when you no longer "smell" it.

What is the limbic system

The limbic system is the set of deep brain structures that represent the emotional and memory center of the brain. It is composed of structures that work in continuous synergy.

Why continue diffusing even without smelling the scent

When you reach olfactory habituation during a diffusion session, the instinctive response is to turn off the diffuser or change the oil. In most cases, it is not necessary — and often counterproductive.

What is happening when you "no longer smell": receptors continue to work → the limbic system receives signals → neurotransmitters are released → emotional and physiological benefits persist. Your conscious perception fades; the limbic system does not.

Programmed dry diffusion — with intermittent sessions and breaks — is the most effective strategy to maintain limbic activation without saturating the environment.
